Muscovy Ducks

Duck Breeds we have on our farm

All of our ducks are good, hearty birds well suited for Alberta's winter weather. The great thing about ducks is that they don't require much to raise. They are so easy!! A pool, bucket of water, food, and treats!!  Straw bedding in the winter and a building to keep out of the wind on really cold days. They must be locked up at night to keep them safe from predators! They are very entertaining on those hard days you have, you can sit and watch them drench everything around them all for the love of water lol!!

Silver Appleyard

This is an endangered breed in Canada. There is not a very big gene pool here. These ducks are very good layers. They lay approximately 200-270 eggs per year!

Saxony

This breed is very friendly and gentle-natured. They are excellent layers and will lay 200-260 eggs per year. They will also brood and raise their own ducklings. They are active foragers and very hardy birds, adapting well to many different temperatures and environments. They are also on the watch list for preservation.

Buff Orpington

The Buff duck is a great forager, a very friendly and docile bird. Hens are good layers of a medium-sized white or slightly tinted egg. This is also a threatened breed.

Cayuga

These are very unique and beautiful ducks and are on the threatened list. They are medium-sized black ducks with beautiful green shine throughout their feathers that will catch your eye. They are also well known for their famous grey-to-black eggs they lay along with some lighter shades. They make great pets!

Pekin

Pekins are well known for their talkative chatter and friendly smiles. They are very social and entertaining. They are also very reliable for eggs for your breakfast in the morning. They are also very heart birds, great to add to any farm.

Indian Runners

These ducks are awesome at foraging for bugs, slugs, or any deterrent crawly creature in your yard. They are the most energetic member of the duck family and are amazing, dependable layers. Great for a backyard flock for someone getting started. They make great pets and are very entertaining to watch.

**We will have Trout Indian Runner and Snowy Indian Runners in 2024!

Muscovies we have on our Farm

We have both solid-colored and wild type of muscovies on our farm to give genetic diversity. They can hatch out in many different colors. We have these in a separate section because though we know this breed as a duck, they are actually closer to the goose family. They do perch and can fly from time to time but they stay in our farm yard and don't fly away as a wild duck would.

Solid Colored

We have the solid-colored type of Muscovy, which is less common and hard to find. They do not carry the whitehead gene and are very beautiful. The solid type does not usually fly and is very friendly. They are also good layers and very hearty birds. We have chocolate, blue, lilac, and black. They all run together so you may get any color or a combination of colors.

Wild Type

We have blue, chocolate, fawn, and black of the wild type without the white head gene. These run together so you will get a variety of colors. Very nice personalities and get along with all species of birds. Very good egg layer, love to forage, and hatch their own ducklings!
